Below is a paragraph quoted from the ST
EDUCATION officials say that a new policy to allow ethnic-minority children to enrol in mainstream Chinese schools will promote their learning of Chinese and help them integrate early into Hong Kong society.
Barrister Vandana Rajwani, a member of the government-appointed Committee on Promotion of Racial Harmony, stressed the need for teachers to be trained to deal with ethnic minorities.
She said two South Asian girls had told their teacher that they hoped to become a doctor and a lawyer.
'The teacher told them, 'It's not possible. Indians cannot be lawyers or doctors. You should be a construction worker or domestic helper.' The girls were shattered.'
Ms Fermi Wong, director of ethnic-minority support group Unison, said: 'One ethnic-minority parent who wanted to put his child in a Chinese primary school was asked by the principal, 'Why do you come here? We are not going to give any support.' '
after reading this article, i realise that i've always, in my entire life, taken this multi racial society for granted. i'm so used to be in a multi racial society that i've long forgotten i'm in one. since young, we've always been taught to befriend friends of different ethinicity, not to isolate them, not to look them as alien, treat them as alien... suddenly this article reminds me that there are countries in the world that are made up of single ethnicity. and i can't believe that the teach actually said that to a little girls!! isn't this racial discrimination?? i mean after all those years when "chinese and dogs not allowed" back in early 20th century in china, is it now their turns to discriminate against other races?? i can't believe this, everybody sure has a luck some time some where, u just gotta wait for yours.
